Specialized Skincare For Men

Let’s face it men and women have different skin that comes along with different skin care needs. Some of the differences between male skin and female skin are skin thickness, facial hair and different hormones which can all play a role in skin oil production, skin sensitivity and the aging process. While men can also benefit from many common female skincare products, the number of products on the market can be overwhelming or appear specifically targeted for women. For most men, a skin care regimen should be simplified and customized to specifically target male skin.

Here are some of our aesthetician recommended favorite products and treatments for better skincare for men.

Skincare for Men: Best Products for Men’s Skin

Cleanser

Cleansing daily is important for several reasons. Cleansing and exfoliating help remove bacteria, excess oil, dead skin cells, minimize pores, improve hydration, and decrease dullness. One of the perks of being a male is that face shaving can benefit the skin because it helps exfoliate. On the other hand this can be opposite with poor shaving techniques which can lead to skin irritations and razor burn. One of our favorite aesthetician picked cleansers for males is Revision Brightening Facial Wash. We love this product because it has Salicylic and Glycolic Acid which exfoliate to decrease breakouts and improve skin texture. It has Vitamin C which brightens the skin and also has antioxidants vitamin E and white tea which help protect the skin from free radical damage and pollution.

Sunscreen

Sun damage is the leading cause of aging. Brown spots, fine lines and wrinkles, and broken capillaries can all be attributed to sun damage. Sun damage can also lead to skin cancer which can be serious. Wearing sunscreen daily is important and our favorite aesthetician picked sunscreen for men is Elta UV Clear Broad Spectrum SPF 46 Untinted. It is formulated with Zinc Oxide and has UVA and UVB sun protection. It also helps calm acne prone skin and is oil and fragrance-free.

Moisturizer

Keeping the skin moist and hydrated helps keep the skin balanced which decreases excess oil production or facial dryness which can lead to breakouts and skin sensitivity. Our favorite moisturizer which can be applied at night time opposite of sunscreen in the morning is Neocutis MicroNight. This is our aesthetician pick not only due to its moisturizing and hydrating lipids, but it is also rich with micro-proteins that improve skin elasticity and firmness.

The Next Level in Skincare for Men: Skin Treatments in our Medical Spa

Two treatments that men love at our practice are the BBL photo facial and the Hydrafacial. The BBL photo facial is a laser system that uses broadband light to target a number of skin concerns such as sun spots, uneven skin tone, facial redness, large pores, acne and acne scarring while also stimulating collagen to improve fine lines and wrinkles. The BBL is ultimately one of those best anti-aging treatments as it is reversing signs of aging and changing the gene expressions of cells that are responsible for aging. The Hydrafacial is a relaxing facial treatment that helps target dullness, hydrates, deep cleanses, exfoliates, and replenishes the skin with antioxidants and peptides. The Hydrafacial leaves the skin smooth and hydrated with no downtime. It is the perfect pick me up to look and feel your best before a business meeting or special event.

Why a skin care professional can help you fight acne faster

Acne is not solely problematic for teens. Half of all women in their twenties face sporadic bouts of acne, and a quarter of forty-somethings still fight acne while keeping up with their BOTOX® treatments according to a report published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Topical drugstore preparations may shorten the lifespan of an isolated blemish, but such tools are very limited. Benzoyl peroxide and alcohol are the chief active ingredients in most over-the-counter spot treatments. For some troubled skin, these two ingredients cause as many skin problems as they solve. An oil-reducing skin treatment may work for a teen with oily skin, but these ingredients cause dryness and are a poor fit for more mature skin. It’s counterproductive to seek age-defying skin treatments while parching the skin in an attempt to reduce breakouts. Dry skin reveals all of the fine lines and therefore starts to age beyond its time.

Just as a mechanic with only two tools cannot hope to restore a car to perfect condition, over-the-counter acne products cannot restore healthy skin. Skin care professionals have a wealth of tools at their disposal. They combat acne with topical preparations, prescription medications and even injections of anti-inflammatory cortisone to end a painful pimple’s life quickly. Taking a multi-faceted approach to fighting acne pays off in the form of shorter, less severe breakouts.

A doctor can prescribe topical acne products that contain antibiotics to kill the bacteria that cause acne. Prescription creams are far more effective against treating acne than their drugstore counterparts. Oral medications help clear acne internally instead of topically. Painful cystic acne succumbs quickly to cortisone injections or by draining to relieve the painful pressure. Laser treatments and dermabrasion may help some cases of acne as well as restoring a smoother surface to previously troubled skin that has left scars. Skin care professionals can also work with other doctors to adjust medications that might worsen acne such as oral or injected steroids.

Other conditions such as rosacea or folliculitis mimic acne’s appearance but require different treatments. While a skin care professional can recommend appropriate treatments, only a qualified dermatologist can diagnose a skin condition, so it is vital to seek dermatological advice for any sudden rash or breakout. Trying an over-the-counter acne regimen to treat a skin problem other than acne could exacerbate the irritation and discomfort of the condition.

Healthy skin means more than simply being acne-free; a doctor’s/aesthetician’s care ensures that once the blemishes disappear, the skin remains vibrant and healthy. Injections of BOTOX® or cosmetic fillers reduce the appearance of deep acne scars, while laser resurfacing smooths away shallow imperfections left behind from previous bouts of acne.

Acne merits a doctor’s attention because it is a bacterium that needs treatment. Seek a specialist in healthy skin and end the cycle of dry skin and breakouts instead of those over-the-counter products.
