Xeomin® is the newest botulinum toxin type A injectable. It has just been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in patients with cervical dystonia and blepharospasm. It has not yet been approved for cosmetic use; however, it is being used off-label to treat frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead wrinkles.
How does Xeomin® work?
Xeomin® works by relaxing muscles, similar to BOTOX® and Dysport®, with just a couple of differences. One important difference is that, unlike BOTOX® and Dysport, Xeomin® contains no additives. This may mean less risk of the patient developing antibodies that can prevent the toxin from having its desired effect.
Xeomin® is injected into the muscle and may take 7-14 days to take effect. Results may last 3-6 months.
