Life can be hard on our bodies and our skin. From unwanted weight fluctuations and unsightly bulges to sun damage, wrinkles, our bodies take a lot of abuse. While some people might embrace the changes as a sign of having lived a full life, others choose to defy mother nature. Diet, exercise, and the occasional plastic surgery can go a long way in helping to turn back the hands of time. But what if you’ve done all those things to rejuvenate your appearance, yet your skin’s complexion just won’t cooperate?
What is the HALO Laser?
Skin care technology has come a long way from the oils and creams of Ancient Egypt or even the pioneering facelifts performed during the 1920’s. Society’s thirst for new and innovative skin care treatment has inspired the invention one of the most successful tools used to treat skin anomalies to date. The Halo system is a revolutionary new type of laser that can be used to treat the visible signs of aging and other skin conditions. From skin discoloration and large pore size to acne scars or even fine lines and wrinkles, this completely customizable laser will allow effective treatment of multiple cosmetic concerns at one time.
Traditionally considered one of the most effective treatments for improving the signs of aging, an ablative laser removes the outer layer of damaged skin forcing the healing process and generating new skin growth. With an ablative laser treatment, one to two weeks of recovery time is needed after treatment and the results can be seen with the new skin growth. In contrast, a non-ablative laser is less invasive with little to no downtime and the noticeable improvement to the treated areas will happen gradually. By using focused energy within the deeper layers of the skin, the surface is left largely intact. Collagen growth is stimulated tightening the underlying tissues thus improving the tone and appearance of the skin. For patients that need to return to their everyday lives right after treatment, the non-ablative laser is generally preferred, however, a series of treatments over a period of weeks or even months are needed to achieve optimal results. As the world’s first hybrid fractional laser, the Halo uses both ablative and non-ablative wavelengths in a single pass and is designed to maximize results with reduced downtime.
The Halo laser uses dual laser technology to completely rejuvenate the skin from the inside out. Patients frequently seek this non-invasive treatment to turn back the clock and erase cosmetic signs of the aging process, such as changes in skin tone, large pores, and discoloration caused by sun damage. The customized wavelengths of light utilized by Halo work to penetrate deep layers of tissue while also stimulating the surface of skin. Patients look refreshed and rejuvenated and do not need to take time away from their normal scheduled to heal.
Typically, the Halo procedure takes 2 to 2 1/2 hours from pre-treatment preparation to the completion of the procedure and post-procedure care. Prior to beginning, a numbing cream is applied to the treatment area. Once the cream has taken effect, the procedure itself may take up to 45 minutes. The handheld device uses dual wavelengths to precisely target and correct skin issues while the systems integrated cooling technology helps to keep you comfortable during the procedure. Upon completion, a restorative skin cream is applied to the treatment area to keep the skin moist and a cool fan with mineral water mist may be used to help dissipate the heat.
The majority of patients who have been treated with the Halo laser have reported that the procedure is virtually pain-free. Others have described the treatment as a comfortable but prickly or with a slight stinging sensation with some associated heat. During the post-treatment phase, the treated area will feel a warming sensation for about thirty minutes. Those who’ve required deeper treatments will feel the heat for a longer period of time but it will pass as well throughout the day.
Though you will look like you have been in the sun too long after treatment, you can resume normal behavior immediately. Makeup may be applied after 24 hours if treatment was on the face. Redness, slight swelling and a warm feel to the treated skin is expected but will dissipate over time. Cold compresses will help alleviate the warmth of your skin and reduce any swelling associated with laser treatment. Over the counter oral pain relievers can be used to if minor discomfort is felt.
You will notice tiny dark spots and a bronzed appearance to the treatment area on or about the third day after your procedure. It is typical for your skin to be very dry during this time and it could even have a sandpaper texture before it begins to flake and peel. Peeling skin is usually seen within five days of treatment as the treated tissue is being replaced by fresh new skin. This process can last up to seven days if treatment was on the face but up to two weeks if anywhere else on the body. While improvement will be seen starting on the fourth or fifth day after treatment, dermal regeneration will continue over the next several months. However, the greatest results are usually seen within the first three weeks.
Laser treatment for some conditions, such as pigmentation concerns, typically take several weeks to be completely evident. If you have more severe concerns, you can opt for multiple Halo treatments that are scheduled at least three weeks apart. Because this treatment stimulates collagen growth, improved results will be seen after each treatment.
For at least the first three months after your Halo procedure, sunscreen MUST be applied on a daily basis but is recommended as a part of your long-term skincare routine. With proper skin care, the results from your laser treatment can last for years. Your skin care team will discuss additional ways to prolong the impact of your treatment.
