Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as tummy tuck, appeals to patients who want to flatten and shape the abdomen and waist through the removal of excess fat, and the attachment of loose, separated muscles.
Most often, individuals who seek a tummy tuck procedure have excess skin and pockets of fat they could not remove through diet and exercise. Additionally, women who seek tummy tucks have muscles that have separated from the abdomen and skin, and have extended apart due to multiple pregnancies.
Like all successful surgeries, a tummy tuck requires an effective consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon. The surgeons at Ritacca Cosmetic Surgery & Medspa are highly skilled and trained to perform this body-contouring procedure. To create a tailored treatment plan, the surgeon will discuss the following with each patient:
- Tummy tuck goals
- Overall health condition, which includes drug allergies, past and current medical treatments
- Medications, which includes herbal supplements, vitamins
- Drug, alcohol and tobacco usage
- Previous major or minor surgeries
On the day of the tummy tuck consultation, the surgeon will evaluate any possible pre-existing health conditions that may increase the risk factors of your surgery. The doctor will also take photographs of the target area, discuss options, and answer any questions you may have about the tummy procedure.
A tummy tuck is performed under local or general anesthesia, and lasts between two and five hours.
After the administration of anesthetics, the doctor will make a horizontal incision between the belly button and the pubic hairline. The incision’s length and shape will depend on the amount of excess skin to be removed. After the incision, the skin is lifted to allow the surgeon access to the underlying abdominal muscles that need repair.
The doctor may make a second incision in the navel area if the upper abdomen has excess skin that needs removal.
Once the separated muscles are repaired, the skin is pulled down, excess skin is trimmed, and the remaining skin is sutured together. An opening for the belly button may be created. Sutures and surgical adhesives are used to close the incisions.
The recovery period may take anywhere from two weeks to a few months. This depends on your overall health and your strict adherence to your surgeon’s recovery instructions.
Although a tummy tuck will most likely leave a permanent scar in the incision area, the scar is concealed easily with clothing.
As long as you maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise, your tummy tuck results will last for a long time.
