The Benefits of Cryotherapy

The Benefits of Cryotherapy

At the Ritacca Laser Center, we’re constantly looking for safe, minimally invasive ways to reverse the aging process. In doing so, we often turn to established medical technologies. Many of the methods doctors use to heal injuries and manage chronic health conditions can also encourage cosmetic rejuvenation. This overlap exists because compounds used during healing, like collagen and elastin, are also essential for the maintenance of firm, smooth, and youthful skin.

Cryotherapy has been used for decades to provide pain relief and prompt tissue regeneration, but it’s only recently been adopted by plastic surgeons and dermatologists. Today, this procedure is used to quickly and painlessly improve the health and appearance of patients.

What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is a system wherein patients are exposed to hyper-cooled vapors for two to four minutes. This exposure time is sufficient to stimulate the healing process and metabolism, while being too short to induce cold-related injuries.

Cryotherapy can be applied to the whole body or just specific areas, such as the face. When applied to the face, cryotherapy is often called a “cryofacial” or “frotox.”

What are the Benefits of Cryotherapy?

The primary advantages of cryotherapy over other skin rejuvenation treatments are safety and convenience. No harsh chemicals or injections are used during cryotherapy, and patients can resume their normal activities soon after treatment. Furthermore, cryofacials do not cause the skin to crack or peel. Cosmetically, cryotherapy can grant all of the following benefits:

  1. Instantly tighter skin.

Extreme cold causes a wide variety of materials to contract, and human tissue is no exception. When cold vapors are applied to the skin, the blood vessels and connective tissues below the epidermis are immediately constricted. This instantly (and painlessly) firms the skin, lifting the face and reducing the visibility of wrinkles.

  1. No-contact exfoliation.

Under the right conditions, cold air can act as a powerful exfoliant. Cryofacials open clogged pores, induce the natural shedding of dead skin cells, and reduce the production of sebum (skin oil). This creates a radiant, glowing look and helps control acne symptoms.

  1. Increased collagen production.

When the body is subjected to extreme cold, it instantly goes into “panic mode” because it assumes that the skin is being injured (e.g., by frostbite). In its rush to repair potential damage, the body sends a surge of collagen and elastin to the skin’s surface. This collagen and elastin then gets to work, rebuilding and strengthening the epidermis.

This healing process, which is a fundamental part of how laser and chemical peels work, effectively combats age-related collagen loss. In the weeks following a cryofacial, the skin gradually becomes fuller and healthier.

  1. Better fat burning.

Our bodies have to burn a lot of calories to stay warm in cold conditions. In fact, being exposed to temperatures cold enough to induce shivering can burn 100 calories in just 15 minutes. Some people therefore use whole-body cryotherapy to enhance their weight loss efforts. The deep cold used during this procedure may burn up to 500 calories per session. However, it’s important to remember that cryotherapy is not a feasible substitute for a healthy lifestyle. Caloric restriction and regular exercise are necessary for weight loss, with or without the assistance of cosmetic treatments.

If you’re interested in skin rejuvenation but don’t want to deal with downtime or peeling, cryotherapy might be right for you. To learn more about this treatment, contact the Ritacca Laser Center at 847-367-8815.

Facial Rejuvenation: The Key to Your Youth

facial skin care for women

Feeling self-conscious about the signs of aging is more than an inconvenience. Poor self-esteem can cause you to withdraw from friends and miss opportunities; it can also diminish your energy and dampen your youthful, vital spirit. Solving this issue, rather than trying to ignore it, can empower you socially, emotionally, and professionally.

As the stigma surrounding cosmetic medicine lessens, researchers are discovering that both plastic surgery and non-invasive facial rejuvenation have significant mood-boosting benefits. According to a study published in Clinical Psychological Science, those who elect to have cosmetic surgery typically have higher self-esteem, suffer from less anxiety, and even report feeling healthier overall as they get older (when compared to people who don’t undergo any aesthetic procedures). This study also revealed that those who have cosmetic surgery almost always have a better body image: Having just one area of the face or body modified seems to improve how people view themselves as a whole.

Though this research shouldn’t be taken to mean that plastic surgery is right for everyone, it does indicate that looking younger is a valid and vital part of feeling younger. If you’re mentally and physically healthy and have an interest in facial rejuvenation, it’s worthwhile to book a consultation and explore your options.

What is Facial Rejuvenation?

Facial rejuvenation can take the form of facelift surgery or it can be conducted solely via noninvasive treatments like facial peels and injectables. Many patients choose to combine both surgical and nonsurgical procedures to achieve comprehensive results, but this isn’t always necessary. A good surgeon will personalize your treatment plan to reflect your aesthetic needs, your schedule, and your budget. Some of the most popular facial rejuvenation procedures are outlined below:

Facelift Surgery

Facelift surgery is the most effective option for patients who have visible jowls, hanging neck skin, or other signs of advanced skin laxity. Modern facelift methods don’t stretch or pull the skin tight; instead, your surgeon will carefully lift the muscles and connective tissues that support your face, restoring your features to a more youthful position. Then, if necessary, he or she will remove any excess skin. These advanced techniques create graceful, natural results that remain visible for ten or more years.

Fractora Laser Skin Resurfacing

During Fractora laser skin resurfacing, a precisely calibrated medical laser is used to dissolve damaged skin cells and stimulate the production of skin-firming collagen. This treatment is a great way to get rid of the signs of cumulative UV damage (i.e., age spots, diffuse fine lines, and areas of leathery or “crepey” looking skin). It can also smooth out pitted scars and eliminate vascular abnormalities, like broken capillaries and spider veins.

Injectables

Injectable fillers, like Juvéderm® and Restylane®, can safely restore facial volume that’s been lost over time. Fillers are often employed after facelift surgery to “fill in” any remaining facial hollows or creases. They can also be used to occupy loose skin and elevate the facial features of patients who don’t want surgery.

Non-surgical patients are often advised to combine fillers with a neuromodulator (like BOTOX® or Dysport) for more dramatic results. BOTOX® targets dynamic wrinkles on the upper face (e.g., crow’s feet and frown lines), whereas fillers primarily target sagging and volume loss on the lower face.

Though the treatments above form the backbone of most facial rejuvenation plans, they’re just a small part of what we offer at the Ritacca Laser Center. To learn more about the many ways our experts can help you look (and feel) your best, contact us to arrange a personal consultation.

Reset Your Skin for Fall with a PRP Facial

Few skin treatments are as appropriate for fall as the PRP facial, informally called the “vampire facial.” Despite its somewhat intimidating nickname, this treatment is every bit as gentle as it is rejuvenating. The PRP facial is completely hypoallergenic and utilizes powerful compounds derived from the most natural source of all—your own body.

What is a PRP Facial?

PRP stands for “platelet-rich plasma.” During a PRP facial, a very small amount of blood is removed from the patient and processed in a centrifuge. The centrifuge separates platelets, which are rich in human growth factors, from other components in the blood, like red blood cells.

Once the patient’s PRP has been prepared, a form of microdermabrasion is used to prime her (or his) skin for its platelet infusion. Tiny “micro incisions” are made in the skin, allowing the platelets in the PRP to penetrate deep into the dermis. This way, they’ll stimulate rejuvenation in the connective tissues that support the skin, as well as improving the skin’s surface.

What Makes the PRP Facial so Effective?

The two-step process that powers every PRP facial has important implications for patients looking to fight the signs of aging: First, the abrasive action used to prepare the skin to receive PRP directly stimulates the body’s healing response. This increases production of the skin-firming compound known as collagen. (Collagen levels gradually decline with age, leading to the formation of creases and loose skin.)

This natural healing process is greatly accelerated by the application of PRP. The growth factors contained in platelets have been shown to stimulate collagen production and speed up cell turnover (the rate at which dead and damaged cells are replaced by new, healthy cells). The PRP facial can, therefore, get rid of wrinkles, fine lines, acne, and areas of dull or dry skin (while improving the overall condition of the skin). It accomplishes all of this without the use of lasers or harsh chemical agents, so patients don’t have to worry about lingering redness, soreness, or peeling after having a PRP facial.

What to Expect After Having a PRP Facial

Most patients recover quickly after having a PRP facial. You may notice some mild redness and swelling for the first 24 to 48 hours after your treatment. Then your skin will take on a fresh, rosy glow. We recommend using a cool compress and avoiding the use of makeup for two days after your PRP facial; this will minimize swelling and prevent irritation. You should also be careful to avoid direct sun exposure for at least a week after your facial.

Though you’ll see some improvement in the condition of your skin just a few days after having this procedure, full results continue to develop over two to four weeks. This is the case because changes in skin texture take time to fully manifest. Your body needs a few weeks to completely eliminate dead skin cells and replace them with healthy, collagen-enriched cells.

If you’re interested in making the PRP facial part of your personalized treatment plan, feel free to contact Ritacca Cosmetic Surgery & Medspa to arrange a consultation. We’ll be happy to explain this cutting-edge skin rejuvenation treatment to you in more depth.

Specialized Skincare For Men

Let’s face it men and women have different skin that comes along with different skin care needs. Some of the differences between male skin and female skin are skin thickness, facial hair and different hormones which can all play a role in skin oil production, skin sensitivity and the aging process. While men can also benefit from many common female skincare products, the number of products on the market can be overwhelming or appear specifically targeted for women. For most men, a skin care regimen should be simplified and customized to specifically target male skin.

Here are some of our aesthetician recommended favorite products and treatments for better skincare for men.

Skincare for Men: Best Products for Men’s Skin

Cleanser

Cleansing daily is important for several reasons. Cleansing and exfoliating help remove bacteria, excess oil, dead skin cells, minimize pores, improve hydration, and decrease dullness. One of the perks of being a male is that face shaving can benefit the skin because it helps exfoliate. On the other hand this can be opposite with poor shaving techniques which can lead to skin irritations and razor burn. One of our favorite aesthetician picked cleansers for males is Revision Brightening Facial Wash. We love this product because it has Salicylic and Glycolic Acid which exfoliate to decrease breakouts and improve skin texture. It has Vitamin C which brightens the skin and also has antioxidants vitamin E and white tea which help protect the skin from free radical damage and pollution.

Sunscreen

Sun damage is the leading cause of aging. Brown spots, fine lines and wrinkles, and broken capillaries can all be attributed to sun damage. Sun damage can also lead to skin cancer which can be serious. Wearing sunscreen daily is important and our favorite aesthetician picked sunscreen for men is Elta UV Clear Broad Spectrum SPF 46 Untinted. It is formulated with Zinc Oxide and has UVA and UVB sun protection. It also helps calm acne prone skin and is oil and fragrance-free.

Moisturizer

Keeping the skin moist and hydrated helps keep the skin balanced which decreases excess oil production or facial dryness which can lead to breakouts and skin sensitivity. Our favorite moisturizer which can be applied at night time opposite of sunscreen in the morning is Neocutis MicroNight. This is our aesthetician pick not only due to its moisturizing and hydrating lipids, but it is also rich with micro-proteins that improve skin elasticity and firmness.

The Next Level in Skincare for Men: Skin Treatments in our Medical Spa

Two treatments that men love at our practice are the BBL photo facial and the Hydrafacial. The BBL photo facial is a laser system that uses broadband light to target a number of skin concerns such as sun spots, uneven skin tone, facial redness, large pores, acne and acne scarring while also stimulating collagen to improve fine lines and wrinkles. The BBL is ultimately one of those best anti-aging treatments as it is reversing signs of aging and changing the gene expressions of cells that are responsible for aging. The Hydrafacial is a relaxing facial treatment that helps target dullness, hydrates, deep cleanses, exfoliates, and replenishes the skin with antioxidants and peptides. The Hydrafacial leaves the skin smooth and hydrated with no downtime. It is the perfect pick me up to look and feel your best before a business meeting or special event.

Some may experience a bruise at the injection site and if so that typically resides within one week. BOTOX® takes about 7-14 days to take full effect and lasts approximately 3-4 months. It is the perfect holiday pick me up to look and feel refreshed.

Injectable Fillers

It can also “plump up” the lips, sculpt the cheeks and restore a youthful shape to the face. Common fillers such as Restylane®, Juvéderm® and Voluma are made with hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the body that works with collagen and elastin to increase volume. Injectable fillers are quick procedures with minimal downtime. Some may experience swelling or bruising after treatment which often subsides within one week. Coolsculpting Fat Reduction

north chicago coolsculpting before and after

Many can relate to having an area, or 2 or 3, that we wouldn’t mind getting rid of some unwanted fat. Coolsculpting is a noninvasive fat reduction treatment that can do just that! Coolsculpting freezes the fat cells in a clinically proven method called cryolipolysis. During the treatment which takes about 30-60 minutes per area, an applicator is placed over the bulge of fat drawing it in with tight suction. The fat cells then painlessly freeze and naturally shatter and get absorbed and eliminated by the lymphatic system. During treatment, one can comfortably watch television or work on their laptop during treatment. There is no downtime and one can resume their normal activities immediately. The average person permanently loses up to 25% of the fat cells in the area treated. Some see results in as little as 4 weeks but it can up to 16 weeks to see optimal results. Common areas treated are the abdomen, love handles, thighs, back, arms and under the chin. Coolsculpting is an excellent alternative for those who are not ready for surgery or those that are not surgical liposuction candidates. This is the perfect pick me up to feel great in your holiday attire.

Ultherapy Skin Tightening

north chicago ultherapy nonsurgical cosmetic treatments

Ultherapy is a nonsurgical tissue tightening treatment that uses advanced ultrasound technology and imaging to stimulate collagen and tighten the skin. While Ultherapy is not a facelift it is a gold standard nonsurgical alternative as it is the only treatment other than a facelift that treats at a deeper level, the muscle. It also bypasses the outer layer of the skin and precisely delivers the energy where it is needed to stimulate collagen. New collagen will grow over time. When the new collagen grows it will gradually tighten and lift the skin, resulting in a natural lift of the brows, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and neck. The treatment takes approximately 45 to 90 minutes and there is minimal downtime. Some may experience swelling that often resides within 1 week. Some notice an immediate lifting however results are gradual and will continue to build over the next 6 months. This is the perfect treatment to get ready for the holidays for those not ready for surgery or looking to extend their surgical results!

Forever Young BBL Photo-rejuvenation

before and after photofacial

As we age our skin gets damaged. Signs of damage can appear as fine lines, freckles, age spots, acne scarring, enlarged pores, and redness caused by broken capillaries and rosacea. Photo-rejuvenation reduces these signs of aging using non-invasive, painless pulses of light. The Sciton Forever Young BBL device is the only photofacial system that also stimulates collagen and changes the expressions of the genes that are responsible for aging. The treatment is a quick painless treatment that has minimal downtime. Sunspots often get darker over the next few days after treatment which often resolve within in 1 week. Makeup can be applied directly after treatment. A series of 4 treatments is recommended for optimal results spaced 4 weeks apart. This is a great treatment for almost everyone whether you are a male, female, in your 20’s or in your 70’s. This is the perfect pick me up for a beautiful complexion during the holidays.
