More than 80 million people in the United States have problems with their veins, the vessels that return blood to the heart once it has circulated through the body. Many people suffering from venous disorders come to vascular surgeons looking for treatment to either relieve pain or improve the visible appearance of diseased veins.
Spider veins, or telangiectasias, are small, thin, blood vessels visible beneath the skin. They appear most commonly on the face and legs and may look like a series of lines, tree branches, or a spider- or web-like shape with a dark center. It is estimated that they affect nearly half of adult women in the U.S.
Spider veins are caused by a variety of factors, including heredity, pregnancy (and other conditions that involve changes in hormone levels), weight gain, long periods of standing, and certain medications. They often appear red or blue, and because they form on the face, thighs, calves and ankles, many patients are bothered by the way they look. Others seek medical treatment for uncomfortable symptoms such as aching, burning, swelling and cramping.

Varicose veins are swollen, dark blue or purple blood vessels that you can see and feel beneath the skin. They often look like twisted cords, and usually appear on the calves, inside of the legs, and ankles.
Varicose veins form when the valves within a vein weaken and allow some blood to flow backward. The vein weakens under the additional strain and balloons outward, raising the skin surface.

Most people with varicose veins seek cosmetic treatment to reduce their appearance on the legs. Treatment often takes care of minor discomfort associated with the condition such as swelling, fatigue, itching and cramps. Sometimes, however, more significant problems can develop if veins are left untreated. Venous insufficiency occurs when blood becomes so clogged that it cannot return to the heart. This, in turn, can cause a clot to form that may block blood flow or break free and travel to the heart or lungs and cause severe damage. Bleeding infection and skin ulcers are also possible complications. For this reason, patients with varicose veins should be examined by a professional.
Minimally invasive EVLT® (or endovenous laser treatment) uses targeted laser energy to seal the vein shut and help you look and feel better fast.
- Treatment in less than an hour
- Performed by a doctor in the doctor’s office
- Up to 98% success rate
- Immediate relief of symptoms
- Return to normal activity immediately – with little or no pain

Hereditary factors cause curing varicose veins impossible, however certain activities can help relieve discomfort from existing varicose veins and prevent others from developing:
- Exercise regularly
- Avoid standing for long periods of time
- Avoid sitting for long periods
- Control weight
Since these activities do not treat the underlying cause of the disease, varicose veins and spider veins will usually enlarge and worsen over time.
If you suffer from varicose veins or spider veins, we invite you to contact us for an initial screening.

Facial veins are vascular lesions, formed by abnormally large or numerous blood vessels located directly under the surface of the skin. These vessels may be visible through the skin or result in a reddish appearance of the skin. Spider veins are the most common vascular lesions. Easily treated with lasers, these veins can be treated right here in our office.
How does this treatment work?
This treatment utilizes the principle of “Thermo-Coagulation” which is based on a high frequency wave– a microwave– heating up the thread vein without affecting the outer layers of the skin. The machine selectively heats the thread vein, destroying it and allowing the body to reabsorb it over a period of time.
Is it dangerous?
What are the side effects? No, microwave technology is not dangerous. The microwaves penetrate the tissue to approximately 0.5mm-2mm at the most, which does not have any adverse effects. Dr. Ritacca was one of few physicians who was trained by Dr. Newman, the inventor of the Veinwave. When administered properly, Veinwave does not scar and will not cause hypo or hyperpigmentation.
Is it painful?
Most people find this to be a relatively painless treatment.
What is the downtime for this procedure?
There is virtually no downtime, however some patients may experience some mild redness in the area treated. This may last 3 weeks and in rare cases this lasts 5-6 weeks. H
How many treatments will I need?
A single area may require just one treatment session in order for it to disappear. However, repeat sessions may be required for some patient-especially if multiple areas are affected.
