Routine Eye Exams

Yearly eye exams are extremely important and should be included in everyone's health care regime.  If you have blurry vision, it can many times be easily corrected with glasses, contacts, or laser vision correction.  Your comprehensive eye exam will also check for eye diseases that may have no early symptoms but should still be treated as to avoid loss of vision.

Your exam may include diagnostic tests including a visual field, wavefront, refraction and retinoscopy.  If you require contacts or glasses, our full-service optical shop provides a wide array of designer brands such as Gucci, Prada, Versace, and more.

Please remember that during your exam, you eyes may need to be dilated.  Dilation drops make your pupils bigger in order to get a better view of the internal structure of the eye.  Dilation may last up to 36 hours and your eyes may become sensitive during this time.  Sunglasses may be used to minimize glare and light sensitivity.

Glaucoma Evaluations

Glaucoma is the name given to a group of eye diseases in which the optic nerve at the back of the eye is slowly destroyed.  In most people, this damage is due to an increased pressure inside the eye. In other patients, the damage may be caused by poor blood supply to the vital optic nerve fibers, a weakness in the structure of the nerve, and/or a problem in the health of the nerve fibers themselves .  It is important to routinely monitor your glaucoma to prevent complications.

Cataract Evaluations & Surgery

Cataracts are very common and are more likely to occur with age.  A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of the eye that can occur in one or even both eyes.  It is caused by the clumping of protein that makes up the lens resulting in blurred vision.

Although cataracts can be related to age, they can also be caused by other factors such as diabetes, smoking, alcohol use, and other environmental factors such as prolonged sun exposure.

How are cataracts treated?

If you are diagnosed with cataracts, you will most likely require surgery.  Cataract surgery is typically a quick, outpatient procedure that is done in our surgicenter in which the doctor will remove the clouded lens.  In some cases, the lens will need to be replaced with an artificial lens.

If you have any symptoms such as cloudy or blurry vision, poor night vision, double vision, halo effect, or frequent prescription changes, call one of our doctors to schedule your medical exam.

Advanced Surface Ablation (PRK)

Advanced Surface Ablation (PRK)  is a relatively new laser vision procedure that has additional safety features over LASIK making it an ideal alternative for some patients. Instead of cutting a flap on the front of the cornea, the surface skin cells (epithelium) are loosened with a diluted alcohol solution and removed. The corneal surface is then treated with the laser and covered with a bandage contact lens.
The margin of safety with ASA may be greater than that with LASIK as the need for a microkeratome is eliminated, so there's no risk of flap complications. You do not need to worry about rubbing your eye or bumping it after surgery and having the LASIK flap slip or wrinkle, because there is no flap. The nerve endings that control tear secretion are not cut, so there is less of a problem with dry eye after surgery.
ASA removes tissue within the cornea to treat low to high levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

To treat nearsightedness, the steep cornea is made flatter by removing tissue from the center of the cornea. This moves the point of focus from in front of the retina to directly on the retina.

To treat farsightedness, the flat cornea is made steeper by removing tissue outside of the central optical zone of the cornea. This moves the point of focus from behind the retina to directly on the retina.

To treat astigmatism, the cornea is made more spherical -- like a basketball instead of a football. This eliminates multiple focusing points within the eye and creates one point of focus on the retina. Astigmatism can be treated at the same time as nearsightedness and farsightedness.

ASA is a better choice for those who:

  • want to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contacts
  • are over 18 years of age
  • have had a stable eye prescription for at least one year
  • have no health issues affecting their eyes
  • have wide pupils
  • have corneas too thin for LASIK
  • want to avoid LASIK flap complications
  • who want to minimize dry eye problems after surgery
  • who cannot have LASIK because of eye pressure problems (glaucoma)
  • who cannot have LASIK because of corneal dystrophy problems
  • who do not want LASIK because it requires a microkeratome
