ORBERA™ Managed Weight loss System has been tested and proven to be effective. Dr. Wallace and our trained staff can help patients break through weight loss barriers and coach you toward healthy habits and keep the weight off – for good.
This FDA-approved system uses a gastric balloon that occupies space in the stomach. The balloon is placed into the stomach through the mouth, using a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure, while the patient is under mild sedation. Once in place, the balloon is filled with salt water (saline) so that it expands into a spherical shape. The balloon can be filled with different amounts of saline (from 400 to 700 cc) to best match the patient’s body structure.
How does it work?
The ORBERA Intragastric Balloon System takes up space in the stomach to help patients lose weight. The system is temporary and should be removed after 6 months. This a “kickstart” to weight loss by occupying space in the stomach, making patients feel fuller, faster and longer. During this time, patients will work with our surgeon and experienced nurse to create healthier lifestyle habits to maintain weight loss.
Inserting the Balloon: Board certified general surgeon; Dr. Jonathan Wallace places the deflated balloon in the stomach non-surgically, under mild sedation in our accredited surgicenter. The balloon is then filled with saline to about the size of a grapefruit- this process generally takes 20-30 minutes. Patients return home the same day.
Extracting the Balloon: Six months later, the balloon is punctured with an aspiration needle that is specifically designed for this purpose. The needle allows the balloon to fully deflate. After the balloon is fully deflated, it is grasped for extraction. Patients may return home same day.
Who is a candidate for the ORBERA Intragastric Balloon?
The device is used in obese adult patients who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30-40 kg/m2 who have been unable to lose weight through diet and exercise. It is intended to be used while a patient participates in a diet and exercise plan supervised by Dr. Wallace and our experienced nurse.
What are typical results?
Patients on average lose 3.1 times the amount they would with diet and exercise alone. Patients will be provided with structured teaching and tools necessary to retrain their appetite, establish new nutritional habits and begin a reasonable exercise routine. Over 220,000 patients have been treated worldwide.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports more than 72 million Americans have obesity. Individuals with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30 have a 50 -100 percent increased risk of premature death compared to healthy weight individuals, as well as an increased risk of developing more than 30 obesity-related diseases and conditions including type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers.
