Facial veins are vascular lesions, formed by abnormally large or numerous blood vessels located directly under the surface of the skin. These vessels may be visible through the skin or result in a reddish appearance of the skin. Spider veins are the most common vascular lesions. Easily treated with lasers, these veins can be treated right here in our office.
VeinWave is a new procedure approved by the FDA that uses thermocoagulation to reduce the appearance of spider veins and telangiectasias that commonly appear on the legs or face. This procedure is effective in treating even the tiniest veins that cannot be improved with sclerotherapy, as well as those in difficult-to-treat locations such as the face, ankles and knees. Patients experience less pain, no bruising, no downtime and a higher degree of safety with VeinWave as compared to other spider vein treatment options.
Nearly any patient bothered by the appearance of affected veins on the skin can benefit from treatment with VeinWave technology, especially those who do not have time for a long recovery process and are seeking immediate results from a safe procedure. Since spider veins are a purely cosmetic concern, VeinWave is not typically covered by insurance, although patients should check with their individual carrier in order to determine coverage.
During the VeinWave procedure, a very fine needle is inserted into the targeted area to deliver microwave currents that heat and destroy the vein. Currents are precisely administered to several locations along the length of the vein to gently seal without damaging the surrounding tissue. There is virtually no pain associated with this procedure because of the fine needle used, with most patients reporting only a brief sensation similar to pinprick.
In order to achieve desired results from the VeinWave procedure, most patients require two treatment sessions spaced four weeks apart. Some patients may require additional sessions depending on the severity of their individual condition. Each treatment session takes about 15-30 minutes to perform on an outpatient basis.

No, microwave technology is not dangerous. The microwaves penetrate the tissue to approximately 0.5mm-2mm at the most, which does not have any adverse effects. Dr. Ritacca was one of few physicians who was trained by Dr. Newman, the inventor of the Veinwave. When administered properly, Veinwave does not scar and will not cause hypo or hyperpigmentation.
Most people find this to be a relatively painless treatment.
There is virtually no downtime; however, some patients may experience some mild redness in the area treated. This may last 3 weeks, and in rare cases, this lasts 5-6 weeks.
A single area may require just one treatment session in order for it to disappear. However, repeat sessions may be required for some patients-especially if multiple areas are affected.
