Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery) Overview

Nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed today. This procedure reshapes the nose to attain a greater self-confidence and more balanced look to your overall appearance.

Rhinoplasty can improve the contour of the nasal tip, especially when it is upturned, drooping, bulbous or “boxy” in appearance. It is also used to remove humps or depressions to improve the nasal profile. For overly large noses, rhinoplasty can reduce the size to balance it with the other facial features.

Aside from using the procedure for cosmetic purposes, rhinoplasty may be performed for functional reasons as well. Combining nose reshaping with septoplasty or endoscopic sinus surgery can effectively treat certain breathing problems, such as those caused by a deviated septum.

Your Consultation

A successful rhinoplasty procedure begins with an effective consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon. At Ritacca Cosmetic Surgery & Medspa, we offer a free rhinoplasty consultation with one of our top doctors, Dr. Leonard Lu.

As your rhinoplasty consultation is critical to the success of your surgery, it’s essential to be open with your surgeon about your aesthetic goals, especially with regards to appearance and breathing. In addition to that, be prepared to discuss with your doctor any medical conditions you may have, drug allergies or past medical treatments as well as previous surgeries. Moreover, your surgeon will ask about your current medications, herbal supplements, drug allergies, alcohol, tobacco, and drug usage.

Your doctor will also need to evaluate your overall health and pre-existing health conditions to reduce the level of risks and complications during your rhinoplasty procedure. More importantly, the surgeon will discuss about your aesthetic rhinoplasty goals, examine and measure your face, and then take photographs of your nose.

Following that, the surgeon will then determine if you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty. If you are, the doctor will discuss about your rhinoplasty surgery options and tailor your treatment plan to meet your needs.

Before you see your surgeon, it’s essential prepare questions so that you will have a better understanding of the rhinoplasty procedure you plan to get.

The Procedure

During your rhinoplasty surgery, your surgeon will administer either intravenous sedation or general anesthetics to make the entire process a comfortable one. Afterwards, the doctor will make an incision, the type of which will depend on the rhinoplasty procedure. For a closed rhinoplasty procedure, the incision is hidden inside the nose. For open rhinoplasty, the incision is made across the columella, a strip of tissue that separates the nostrils.

Your doctor will then access the structure of your nose to reshape it by raising gently the skin that covers the nasal bones and cartilages. Depending on your unique case, your surgeon may correct a deviated septum, remove bone or cartilage to reduce the size of the nose, or add more cartilage grafts to meet your desired result or to improve the functionality of your nose.

Once the necessary corrections and enhancements are made, the surgeon will redrape the nasal skin and tissue, and close the incisions using sutures.
