Breast Augmentation Overview
The most commonly performed cosmetic surgery in the United States, breast augmentation, allows women of all shapes and sizes to enhance their breasts. Breast augmentation can enhance the breasts by making them fuller, firmer, and more symmetrical, and in effect, improve the cleavage and help create a more voluptuous figure.
You will have the chance to choose your type of implants: either saline-filled implants with a silicone shell or a silicone-gel filled implant. Depending on your aesthetic desires, you will also be able to choose where the incisions for the procedure will be made, and whether the implants will be placed under the breast tissue or the chest muscle wall. Different incisions include ones that go around the nipple in a semi-circle, ones that go underneath the breast in the crease, and those that are hidden in the armpit.
Breast augmentation is one of the most highly customizable procedures in the plastic surgery industry, which is why your consultation is an incredibly crucial part of your procedure. Our consultations are highly educational, and it’s the perfect opportunity for you to learn about what your options are. Everything from the placement of your incisions, the placement of your implants, the size and shape of your implants, and even the type of implant is a choice that can affect how your breast augmentation can look—thankfully, you and your surgeon will be able to discuss and decide on which options are perfect for your physique and your aesthetic goals.
During your consultation, you can discuss what your objectives are, and get any questions you might have answered. Make sure to be detailed about what you want, and be ready to share your medical and health history. You will also be measured by your surgeon to determine the right dimensions for your implants.
Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure that can be performed in our surgical facility, so you will be able to go home the very next day. A typical breast augmentation procedure will last between 1-2 hours and is generally performed with the patients under general anesthesia. Your surgeon will make your incision of choice, and insert the implants accordingly. Saline implants can be deflated and inserted through the body through much smaller incisions, then filled once placed in the body. Silicone gel implants come already filled, so you will need the larger incisions afforded by the ones under the breast crease.
You will still be feeling the effects of the anesthesia when you arrive home, so it’s important to have someone who can drive you home and take care of you 24 hours after your breast augmentation. Your surgeon will give you instructions for your recovery, and you will be provided with supplies that will help your breast augmentation heal correctly. It’s important that you rest for the first few days of your recovery and to avoid lifting heavy things or undergoing strenuous activity for the first week of your recovery. It’s typical for a patient to avoid work or school for a week after their breast augmentation, but you and surgeon will be able to talk about your recovery schedule in better detail.
